I haven’t been to Umu in a while. They no longer do the special lunches where the chef would talk through the seasonal kaiseki menu and I didn’t really enjoy the atmosphere in the evenings.
Prompted by a longing for top quality Japanese food, my friend and I visited one Saturday evening recently. We took the kaiseki menu and loved everything we ate, including a spectacular autumnal game dish. And I don’t think you can beat the sake list anywhere else in London.
Better still, the atmosphere was relaxing too; it felt like a local restaurant on a Saturday night, albeit one where your locals are well-heeled Russian and Chinese…
